Composer Joel Goldsmith dies at 54

Emmy nominated composer Joel Goldsmith, son of legendary Oscar winning composer Jerry Goldsmith, died April 29 after a long battle with cancer. He was 54. He programmed synthesizers on some of his father's 1970s and 1980s scores including Runaway. But the younger Goldsmith established his own musical career in the late 1970s and early 1980s, scoring sci-fi and horror films including Laserblast, The Man with Two Brains and Moon 44. It was in television, however, that Goldsmith found his niche, composing the music for more than 350 episodes in the Stargate franchise alone, including most of Stargate SG-1 and all of Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe, along with their direct-to-DVD features The Ark of Truth and Continuum. Goldsmith also worked with his father on Star Trek: The Motion Picture (sound effects creator) and scored some 20 minutes of additional music for Star Trek: First Contact, a film his father worked on as well. The elder Goldsmith died in 2004.

'Fringe' beats the odds, 'Graveyard', 'The Next Generation' Blu Ray release date

Big Love‘s Chloe Sevigny is in final talks to join the second season of American Horror Story, set to begin production this summer. Sevigny will play a character named Shelly the Nymphomaniac, who is one of the mortal enemies of Jessica Lange’s character. Apparently, the writers and producers of AHS were such fans of Sevigny that they wrote the part with her in mind. The actress will join Lange, Zachary Quinto, Adam Levine, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, and Lily Rabe in the new season, which Murphy has revealed will be set in an East Coast institution for the criminally insane run by Lange’s character..

Fox has agreed to a fifth and final season for Fringe. While its only 13 episodes, it does give the creative team a chance to end the show they want to, a rarity in this business. But the show, despite poor ratings, has always been supported by the network. "Fringe is a remarkably creative series that has set the bar as one of television's most imaginative dramas. Bringing it back for a final 13 allows us to provide the climactic conclusion that its passionate and loyal fans deserve," said Fox entertainment Chief Kevin Reilly. "The amazing work the producers, writers and the incredibly talented cast and crew have delivered the last four seasons has literally been out of this world. Although the end is bittersweet, it's going to be a very exciting final chapter."

Nathan Fillion and Megan Fox will join Seth Green on a Robot Chicken DC Comics special, which will see the Justice League getting the spoofing treatment previously meted out to Star Wars. Fillion will voice the Green Lantern, with Fox as Lois Lane. Neil Patrick Harris (Two-Face), Alfred Molina (Lex Luthor), Breckin Meyer (Superman) Paul Reubens (The Riddler) are also set to lend their voices to the project, while Green himself will voice Batman, Robin and Aquaman.

Disney has announced that director Henry Selick will helm a stop-motion adaptation of Neil Gaiman's Newbery Award winning kids intermediate novel The Graveyard Book. Selick also adapted Gaiman’s Coraline novel a few years ago. The novel is a riff on Kipling’s The Jungle Book: a young boy survives an attempt on his life -his father, mother and older sister are murdered by the man Jack - and is brought up by the ghosts in the graveyard down from his home. Among the dead are teachers, workers, wealthy prigs, romantics, pragmatists and even a few children -so it takes a graveyard village to raise a child. Here Nobody Owens -Bod for short - has adventures as grows, making friends with in the cemetery -some who are not dead - and learning about his past and his future. Not much beyond this is known, though Selick has been doing some mysterious work with Pixar as well.

Speaking of The Jungle Book, frequent Harry Potter film scribe Steve Kloves is making a deal to write, direct and produce a new adaptation of the Rudyard Kipling classic at Warner Bros. The project will be a live action version of the story about an orphaned boy raised by wolves and other animals, which try to protect him from the ferocious tiger Shere-Khan. Beyond the classic Disney animated version from 1967, there was a live-action version released in 1994 under the helm of Stephen Sommers that starred upcoming stars Jason Scott Lee and Lena Headey.

Star Trek: The Next Generation first season on Blu Ray will officially hit stores on July 24. The second and third season will be out sometime in 2013. Paramount/CBS have spent over a year refurbishing the first season for high definition, painstakingly rescanning each episode due to the fact that the show was shot on 35mm motion picture film. However, while that is an inherently high-definition format, the show was scanned into standard-definition video before any editing or visual effects work was completed. “This was bleeding-edge back in the day,” says Michael Okuda, a scenic designer and technical advisor on ST:TNG who is overseeing the high-def transfer process as a consultant with his wife, Denise. “[The standard-def process] made it possible to do Star Trek: The Next Generation. It was a far more ambitious series from a technical point of view than the original series. But the downside of that is, a quarter-century later, all you have is standard definition.”

'Bond 24' in 2014 & 'The Hobbit' 48fps issue

Columbia/Sony is trying to get back into the 2 year between James Bond films again. At the CinemaCon in Las Vegas, President of Worldwide Distribution, Rory Bruer announced that the 24th Bond film will be released in “late 2014,” which likely means late November or early December. Whether current Bond actor Daniel Craig will be back is unknown, as he does have an option to return, but the studio can always change their mind. Still, seeing that the buzz on the film is good, one speculates that if they can get back into the groove of making films as it was done in its earlier days, keeping Craig on might be better. Then again, with rumors that Judi Dench will bow out as M –with Ralph Fiennes taking over the role- there could be an opportunity to rejuvenate the franchise again for a newer generation of fans.

Also at CinemaCon, Sony showed 10 minutes of footage from the much anticipated The Hobbit. There was some issues with it, though it was not with the content, but with the new 48 frames-per-second technology that Jackson is employing with the film.

Some reactions were:

"Here's what The Hobbit looked like to me: a hi-def version of the 1970s I, Claudius. It is drenched in a TV-like - specifically 70's era BBC - video look. People on Twitter have asked if it has that soap opera look you get from badly calibrated TVs at Best Buy, and the answer is an emphatic YES. It looked completely non-cinematic. The sets looked like sets. I've been on sets of movies on the scale of The Hobbit, and sets don't even look like sets when you're on them live... but these looked like sets. The other comparison I kept coming to, as I was watching the footage, was that it all looked like behind the scenes video. The magical illusion of cinema is stripped away completely." -- Devin Faraci, Bad Ass Digest.

"I’ll admit the footage is such a radical change from what I expected, it’s going to polarize audiences. The 3D looked great and the new 48fps drastically reduces eye strain. That’s the good news. The bad news is the 48fps is so jarring that I’m not sure casual moviegoers will enjoy it…. You no longer have motion blur. You no longer can hide stuff in the darkness… By the end of the presentation, I wasn’t sure I wanted to watch the entire movie in this new 48fps format. This is definitely not what I expected to say. Ultimately, it just didn’t look cinematic and it sort of looked like HD TV.” -- Steve Weintraub, Collider.

"It was too accurate -- too clear. The contrast ratio isn't there yet -- everything looked either too bright or black" -- a projectionist to The L.A. Times.

"Motion blur was gone completely in fast-moving action scenes and dark environment. In general, 48fps has the ability to be at once crisp and smooth, subtle and bold. It is a maelstrom of contradictions when compared to the loads of filmed content I’ve seen in my life. Others started pronouncing it over immediately upon exiting, but I am not passing that judgment (or any for that matter) yet. I saw ten minutes of unfinished, un-graded, incomplete footage as a cross-section, not a full feature film. I did not see the digital seams around creatures like Gollum and the trolls, a major benefit over 24fps. The creatures had a sense of mass in the environment, which was disconcerting in a good way." -- Monty Cristo, AICN
