It had been reported that Damon Lindelof was brought in to
rewrite a new ending to Paramount’s problem plagued Word War Z, which seems to be still helmed by Marc Forster and
starring Brad Pitt-who is also producing the zombie saga based on Max Brook’s book.
Now it’s been revealed that Drew Goddard (Lost,
Cabin in the Woods, Buffy and Angel) writer did the chunk of the actual
writing. It seems while Lindelof gave the film a supposedly better ending, he
had little time to actually write it out, thus Goddard (who is also adapting Robopocalypse for director Steven
Spielberg) was brought in to do the lions work of it. But now both the writers
are off the project and some word has broken –according to Deadline- that
Paramount may still bring in another writer to take a crack at Lidelof’s idea, in
which Goddard wrote about. The Hollywood website added they’re hearing Christopher
McQuarrie may end up doing it, if they don’t go with this last attempt. But
like Lidelof and Goddard, McQuarrie is hot as well, after scoring the
screenplay for Tom Cruise's forthcoming Jack
Reacher, he’s been brought in to help punch up Cruise's next film, All You Need Is Kill. Deadline
reports that while no “official” date has been set for the reshoots
–September/October are still likely, as reported earlier- they do confirm that
director Marc Forster will be helming them. The real question at this juncture
is whether all these behind-the-scenes issue will affect the film in any
negative way when it finally hits theaters next May. While some film goers pay
little attention to the drama of production, the many reports that have come
out on various movie sites can sometimes influence them in a small percentage.
And historically, films that go through as many writers (which includes Matthew Michael Carnahan and J. Michael Straczynski, who did earlier versions) as this do have the tendency
to be more disjointed and less cohesive. But then again, the characterization
is not paramount in such spectacle movies such as these.
