Marvel's secret project; casting notes: 'AHS' & 'Revolution' & A&E to stop at the 'Bates'

.A few sites are reporting that the 2014 release for a film currently listed as Untitled Marvel Movie has been pushed from May 16 to August 1. Many have speculated that the film is Guardians of the Galaxy, but neither the secretive duo of Marvel or Disney would confirm that was indeed what they’re planning to make. This could mean that the studios plan is to have the Guardians fight Thanos, the grinning evil purple character seen after the end credits in The Avengers, which then, theoretically could lead into that movies sequel in 2015. So the current Marvel/Disney timeline is this: Iron Man 3 for May 2013; Thor 2 for November 2013, Captain America 2 in April 2014 and now (presumably) the Guardians of the Galaxy. Logically then, The Avengers 2 would be next.

Two notes of casting includes the recently cancelled The Secret Circle actor Chris Zylka (who’ll also be appearing The Amazing Spider-Man), will be joining the cast of FX’s second season of American Horror Story. There is no information on what character he’ll be playing. Meanwhile Lost alumni Elizabeth Mitchell has signed on for role in the new NBC series Revolution. Mitchell will be taking over the role of Rachel Matheson, the long absent mother of Charlie (Tracy Spiridakos) and Danny (Graham Rogers). She is described as a compassionate and beautiful matriarch who is worried as her children is sent off on a dangerous cross-country journey.  She will primarily appear in flashbacks in the series.

Back in January, I reported that A&E was developing a prequel TV series to Alfred Hitchcock’s classic motion picture Psycho called The Bates Motel. This week they announced that they’ve given a straight-to-series, 10-episode order from executive producers Carlton Cuse (Lost) and Kerry Ehrin (Friday Night Lights, Parenthood). This Psycho prequel will be a contemporary exploration of Norman Bates’ formative years; his relationship with his mother, Norma; and the world they inhabit. NBC previously tried a similar spin-off film back in 1987 with a TV movie of the same name, while a 1990 cable TV movie Psycho IV: The Beginning explored just such a storyline with Henry Thomas playing a young Norman.

Depending on your point of view with 3D, you’ll be either happy or disappointed. Director George Miller has opted out of filming the long-delayed reimaging of Mad Max franchise in that format, and instead will film it in standard 2D and then have the film converted in post-production. Part of the reason maybe the complex set-ups that 3D cameras need and the franchise works more kinetically when the cameras can be adjusted more easily. Also, I guess, Mad Max: Fury Road –already a few years behind schedule (and 27 years since Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome)- cannot afford too many more delays. Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Zoe Kravitz star.
