Actor Michael Clarke Duncan, who scored an Oscar and Golden
Globe nominations for his role in the Frank Darabont’s adaptation of the
Stephen King novel The Green Mile,
died in Los Angeles on September 3 at the age of 54. His death comes nearly two
months after suffering a heart attack.
Born on the south side of Chicago, the hulking actor –who
stood 6-foot-5 and weighed roughly 315 pounds-, had told the Chicago Tribune
that his mom refused to let him play football, so he ended up taking acting.
However, Duncan did parlay his considerable size into a career as a Hollywood security guard, working for the likes of Will Smith and the
late rapper Notorious B.I.G. His first movie role came in 1998's Armageddon
with Bruce Willis. It was Willis who later helped the actor land The Green Mile
role.
Other roles included films such as The Whole Nine Yards,
Breakfast of Champions, The Green Lantern, Sin City and The Scorpion King. He
completed two other films, In the Hive from director Robert Townsend and the
indie boxing drama The Challenger, which will be released in 2013. He had
appeared on television series including Bones, and was a regular on its
short-lived spin-off, The Finder. He made guest appearances on Chuck and Two
and a Half Men and lent his voice to such animated movie and TV projects as
Family Guy and the movie Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore.
